We pull into the Black Sea city/resort of Odessa at 08:43. The journey has taken ten and a half hours covering 515 miles, which works out at just 49 miles per hour. Natalia and I say goodbye amid the melee of disembarkation and all the passengers of the 22:12 sleeper service from Lviv traipse down a long, slippery platform in a downpour.

Classical music plays at Odessa Station, a Soviet-era construction with a domed hall, brass depictions of soldiers clutching guns and a television screen showing current Ukrainian army soldiers in training. We are just 100 miles or so across the Black Sea from Crimea and the Russian troops that invaded the country not so long ago are over there.
